September 2006

thi is my first blog entry.today I’m gonna give a project on crossroads I’ve been working on it for three weeks.

It was exciting to hear at work yesterday that Brumby’s is supporting the CARE Australia World Hunger Campaign. The stores will be raising money for hunger fighting items through a collection tin at the store… They also will be sponsoring School’s World Hunger Education Program with 1200 schools taking part. A coupon will be distributed for a sandwich loaf with a gold coin donation.  So pop in and see us at Brumby’s Thornleigh to support the World Hunger Campaign. …

P .S it’s school holidays in two sleeps …yeee haaa

P.P.S I haven’t had any comments yet…. does anyone read my bits?

Yep. We are tired but it was a great camp – good food, excellent activities. Even got a reasonable couple of nights sleep. But the Sunday weather pattern was something else. The winds howled through the valley near Upper Colo bringing down trees (as happened in most places around Sydney). Thankfully, we weren’t too close to the fire at South Maroota in which a house was lost.

There is nothing more reviving to the spirit than a weekend in the bush…

SingingAlthough a little stressful in the midst of our busyness, we are really looking forward to the CEBS Colo Camp this weekend. There will be about 100 people (40 adults, the rest kids) from around Sydney (including colleague Alan Green’s group from Kingswood). The camp is directed by Alan Taylor from CEBS Berowra, Neville’s brother John is the cook (and keeps us very well fed). Neville’s involved with the music, evening campfire activities and teaches “prussiking” which is kind-of the opposite to abseiling. Vivien will be “roped in” to a few jobs too.

The campsite is on Bruce Proctors property at Upper Colo. He’s been very generous over the years in letting us use his place. And a beautiful place it is too, tucked away in the midst of Wollemi National park, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and populated with some very large Sydney Bluegums.

We’ll be wrecked on Monday but it will be well worth it.

Pieces are coming together! The team from “El Bushdance” are going to put another show together at the BerowraMexican Dance Group Community Centre on November 11th, 2006. Memo Gomez has organised his Mexican folk dance troupe (who “wowed” the audience last year with their colourful, knife wielding dancers) and has asked some other local groups, including some ballroom and Irish dancers, to put on items.

The rest of the night will be full audience-participation “bush dancing” with music and dance calling provided by local band, “Calabash”, with whom Neville is a member.

It was a great night last year (which raised about $4000 for an orphange in India). This year folks have kindly agreed to donate the proceeds to Crossroads International to help fund our work there next year.

dscn1080.JPGAt the beginning of August I got a job at Brumby’s Bakery in Thornleigh to help kick start our fundraising for Crossroads. I work on Wednesdays from 7.30 am until 4pm. Here I am selling some date scones! Photo kindly taken by Harold Harrison
